Meet The Maker Behind C A Woodcraft
Hi, I'm Callum a Kent woodturner and the hands behind C A Woodcraft.
I’ve always enjoyed making things from wood, especially crafting handmade gifts for friends and family. But my true passion for the craft was sparked in 2018 when my wife bought me a beginner’s lathe course as an anniversary gift. From the very first day I tried my hand working at the lathe, my focus and passion for bespoke woodturning began to grow to an entirely new level.
After that experience, I immediately started making adjustments to my Kent workshop to focus primarily on woodturning. Over the years, I’ve spent countless hours in my free time honing traditional techniques and gradually developing my own signature style. I love striking the perfect balance between crafting highly functional wooden homeware tactile pieces designed to be used and loved in your kitchen every day and creating purely decorative wooden art that evokes emotion and serves as a striking focal point in a room
When it comes to my designs, I draw a huge amount of inspiration from the world around me. I am constantly observing the shapes, forms, and textures found in nature, whether that is the sweeping silhouette of a tree line or the rugged contours of a natural landscape. Beyond the outdoors, I also take heavy visual inspiration from the rich history of ceramic pottery. Translating the timeless, classic curves of historical clay vessels into a solid, turned piece of wood is a unique challenge that heavily influences the silhouettes of my vases and hollow forms.
What keeps me constantly inspired in the workshop is the sheer variety of the materials I get to work with. I carefully select each piece of wood for its unique character and hidden potential. Much of my work features homegrown local timber, allowing me to highlight the rustic, natural charm of British woods like English Oak or Spalted Beech. However, I also love to contrast that by working with vibrant, exotic woods responsibly sourced from the other side of the world, like African Rosewood and Padauk
Whether I am turning a practical wooden bowl or carving a sculptural piece, my goal is almost always the same, let the natural grain patterns do the talking. As a local UK maker, I take immense pride in the time, patience, and care it takes to shape and hand-finish every single piece, ensuring it brings a genuine touch of natural beauty into your home.
